Microsoft has announced its “War of a Million” gaming championship to be spread accross eight cities in India involving an estimated 8,000 participants. The contest will be held by Microsoft Gaming Studios in conjunction with Airtel Broadband, HCL Infosystems Ltd, Nvidia, Seagate and AMD. From CIOL:

Centered around three real-time strategy games from Microsoft- Age of Empire, Age of Mythology and Rise of Nations, the championship will simultaneously engage 8,000 gamers across the cities of New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. The championship entails a total cash prize of Rs 10 lakh. The national first prize winner of ‘War of a Million’ championship will be awarded Rs 3,00,000 in cash, and Rs 1,80,000 and Rs 90,000 for the second and the third prize winners.

Many Indian gamers will eventually become Indian programmers, and possibly work for Microsoft, so this should prove benificial for more than just Microsoft’s gaming division.
