Microsoft Releases List Of Backwards-Compatible Xbox Games

Xbox.com now has a list of Xbox games that will have emulators for the Xbox 360. All the games on this list will be playable on the 360, provided you have the hard drive, and some, like Halo and Halo 2, will actually feature enhanced graphics.

I counted 211 games on the list, included all three Grand Theft Auto games, three Tony Hawk games and six Star Wars games. Startlingly missing from the list, at a level that must be intentional, is any game from the Madden football series. In contrast, there are three Blitz games on the list, one of which is four years old. EA must have made some deal to exclude that series from compatibility, since no one could argue it doesn’t meet the popularity threshold.

I can’t print the entire list, but to help illustrate, here are games from my brother’s collection on the list (he has a lot of games):

  • Halo
  • Halo 2
  • NHL Hitz 2003
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds
  • Sonic Mega Collection Plus
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Brute Force
  • Medal of Honor Frontline
  • Crimson Skies®: High Road to Revenge
  • WWE Raw 2
  • NBA LIVE 2003
  • Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
  • The Simpsons™ Road Rage

And here are games that aren’t:

  • Star Wars: Battlefront
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
  • EA Sports Madden NFL 2005
  • Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
  • EA Sports MVP Baseball 2005
  • True Crime Streets of LA
  • Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex
  • Superman: The Man of Steel
  • Outlaw Golf
  • World Championship Poker
  • Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
  • Soul Calibur 2
  • Enter The Matrix
  • Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell

Some of those omissions are just shocking. What games not on the list surprise you?

UPDATE: The Q&A says all games will be made compatible eventually. I sure hope they’re serious about that.

Bill Gates In Doom

Slashdot links to a video of Bill Gates donning a trench coat, wielding a shotgun and killing demons in Doom, as a way of promoting Windows 95 and DirectX. Half-weird, half-funny, and it really shows how far Gates’ speaking skill have improved in ten years.
