Microsoft Vanishing Point Game To Send Winner Into Space

Microsoft is holding a viral puzzle challenge called “Vanishing Point” surrounding the release of Windows Vista, and last night in front of the Bellagio hotel and casino in Las Vegas, they revealed a huge amount of information about the game. I’m not playing the game, and frankly have little idea what it entails, but the method they used to communicate with the crowd is completely brilliant and utterly cool.

Neowin caught this video:

The other really cool thing announced are the prizes. The grand prize is none other than a trip into space on the Rocketplane® XP Vehicle (funny how it’s XP, promoting Vista) which will reach an altitude of 330,000 feet and achieve three to four minutes of weightlessness. Also, you get:

This prize package also includes a Windows Vista based AMD powered Dell desktop pc, 24″ widescreen monitor, Zune™ digital media player, an Xbox® 360 gaming console, three Games for Windows game titiles, a Microsoft® LifeCam VX-6000, Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007, and $50,000 cash to help defray the cost of taxes.

Other prizes are that 15 people will get a package containing an AMD-based Windows Vista PC along with other devices and software. The three different packages:

  • Windows Vista based AMD powered Dell Inspirion 1501 laptops, a Zune, Xbox 360, 3 Games for Windows game titles, a Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000, and Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007.
  • Windows Vista based AMD powered media computers, a 24″ widescreen monitor, a digital media player, Xbox 360, 3 Games for Windows game titles, a Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000, and Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007.
  • Windows Vista based AMD powered gaming computers, a 30” widescreen monitor, a Zune, 3 Games for Windows game titles, a Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000, and Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007.

I’d probably take the third package, or maybe the second and sell the extra Xbox 360. Also, 75 players will receive Windows Vista Ultimate and either an Xbox 360, Zune, or iRiver Clix. 150 players will receive a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate or Office Ultimate 2007. And finally, 250 players will receive three Games for Windows titles. All in all, a really cool way to kick off a contest, and a huge number of great prizes.

  1. […] This is the third week of Microsoft’s Vanishing Point game, which will ultimately send one contestant into space, and each week is begun with a big event showing off the clues to that week’s puzzles. The first week was a video shown in the Bellagio fountain in Las Vegas, then sky-writing above multiple cities, and this week it involved projections on famous structures around the world. Clues were shown on: […]

  2. Have any of the winners been announced? I read originally that the winners would be notified within two days of Feb 1st, then later saw that the grand prize winner would be announced on the 14th. I still haven’t heard of anyone bragging about having won anything, it sure would be nice to be one of the winners!
