Halo 3 Beta Ends

The Halo 3 beta ended last night, after several weeks of many dedicated fans getting a free glimpse of the game millions have been hotly anticipating for years. No word yet on how many people played it, but for the last two weeks running, it was the third most popular game being played on Xbox Live, behind Gears of War and Crackdown.

As Kotaku says, “The irony of Crackdown being more popular should not be lost on anyone,” since Crackdown was derisively referred to as merely a delivery mechanism for the Halo 3 beta. Crackdown turned out to be a great game, something that was so fun people overlooked the flaws and just had a great time playing in the sandbox.

Here are some popular videos of the beta from YouTube:

UPDATE: Major Nelson has final stats on the beta. 820,000 people participated, with more than 12 million hours (or 1,400 years) of gameplay and 350 terabytes downloaded from Xbox Live. Wow.
