Microsoft has told Xbux, a company which connects extreme sports figures connect with promoters and sponsors, to change its name or face its wrath. While Xbux contends that its name is different enough from Xbox and in a different industry, Microsoft is concerned that the brand could cause confusion.
I am going to have to side with Microsoft on this one. Xbux and Xbox run in the same circles, targeting a similar audience, albeit for different purposes. Xbux could wind up playing a part in video games, putting together video game sponsorships, which could cause a lot of confusion. It’s a terrible name, anyway (as is Xbox), and it’s not like they’ve been around long enough or are popular enough that they can’t afford to just change it.

I’d better tell my financial advisor to withdraw my investment in Pintendo Mii, a company that makes voodoo dolls.

You can’t do anything here unless you are already in the beta (which if you are, you already know this, but here’s the live login page for Microsoft’s Gatineau web analytics software, courtesy of Red Cardinal.

LiveSide writes about the Live Search Trial Assistant, a piece of software Microsoft asked 4,000 users to install that tracks their usage of search engines. The program doesn’t monitor what people search for, but rather what search engines they use and what type of engine (web, image, news) they are using. Microsoft’s goal is to see how many searches people use per day and where they do them, for research purposes.

/n software, a company that makes cross-platform software components and development tools for connected applications, is offering to send out several free Windows Powershell sticker to anyone who fills out a form. The PowerShell logo is pretty cool, and all you have to do is fill in some personal information (make sure you don’t use a fake postal address) and you walk away with a couple of stickers for your car, laptop, dog, whatever. Nice.

Microsoft is running a really great Xbox 360 promotion, but one that should be available to more users. The promotion gives two free unspecified Xbox Live Arcade Games if you bought an XBox 360 in the last year (after August 8, 2006) and activated a new Xbox Live subscription. Live renewals don’t get it, and no idea what the games are, but it’s probably still worth trying out just for the heck of it.
