Newegg Intends To Sell Home Server For $179-$189

Newegg has announced it will be selling Windows Home Server within mere weeks, and that depending on wholesale costs, it will probably retail for about $179-$189. That’s pretty much matching the low end of the pricing on international sites, though higher than I had hoped. I thought the U.S. usually got a lower price?

So, now that it’s almost here, are you buying Home Server and building a system (or turning an old system into something far more useful? If you plan on it, drop me a line and let me know of your plans. I’d love to feature the process here.

  1. I am presently running the final beta (RC1?) copy on a 5-year old server. I am considering upgrading the server to use SATA disks or purchasing a new machine. I lean towards purchasing a complete package because it will be newer, smaller, use less energy, and hopefully much more quiet. With these low prices I think I am most likely going to purchase a new machine and retire my old server.

  2. The “drop me a line” link is broken.

My most immediate plan is to either purchase a Windows Home Server package (depending on available hardware) or to build a small server primarily for network storage, backup storage, and media streaming to replace the Infrant ReadyNAS sitting on my desk. Even though I like the Infrant ReadyNAS, I figure Windows Home Server will likely fit into my home network with better security by allowing me to share Windows ACLs across the network. I primarily want a small, quiet server that I can install in the entertainment center and that supports massive storage (say 2TB or so).
