Garmin announced at CES its new nĂ¼vi 780 GPS unit, which will integrate Microsoft’s MSN Direct service. MSN Direct, which transmits information over FM airwaves to devices, will allow the GPS to receive live traffic, fuel prices, weather reports, movie listings, local events of interest, news, and stock prices. Also, users will be able to look up destinations at home in Windows Live Local, then click a button to send it directly to their GPS unit. Very nice.
Amazon has the 780 for $900. It has a sunlight-readable 4.3 inch touch screen, weighs six ounces, an anti-theft feature, internal solid state memory (plus an SD card slot) and a headphone jack for use as an MP3 player. MSN Direct is free for the first three months, followed by a yearly $50 charge. You can also pay $130 and never have to pay the subscription fee again.
Microsoft showed off Power Pack 1 for Windows Home Server at CES this week. The update features 64-bit compatibility for the Home Server Connecter software, letting Windows XP and Vista PCs with 64-bit processors install the software that lets them connect to a Home Server. It also adds the ability to back up your entire Home Server to external storage, so you can take a full backup of your critical data offsite or put it in a fire-proof safe in case something damages your Home Server.
The update, expected to be delivered through Windows Update this Spring, also features improved power consumption and adds support for Chinese and Japanese languages.
This video is just funny. That’s David Lynch, creator of Twin Peaks, director of Mullholland Dr. and other films. The clip is from the DVD extras on Inland Empire, his 2006 film, obviously remixed in the style of an iPhone ad. While it possible he was just trying to be funny, it seems like this is just Lynch being Lynch.
It’s such a sadness, that you think you’ve seen a film on your fucking telephone. Get real.
Microsoft released a list of the 25 most popular GamerTags on Xbox Live, and avid Gears of War player NIZMOJOE is the most popular gamer not employed by Microsoft or with a number one hit single. NIZMOJOE’s GamerTag is the fifth most popular, based on how many times it is viewed online, behind Microsofties Major Nelson (#1), Eric “e” Neustadter (#2), trixie360 (#3) and rapper souljaboytellem (#4).
How good is NIZMOJOE? The 26-year old Italian-American gamer (picture above from his MySpace page, also check out his personal site) is mentioned on gaming websites all over the place, often by irate opponents angry at getting pwned by his sniper rifle. His sniper montage video, embedded below, has been viewed almost 1.4 million times on YouTube, and all of his videos regularly get 20-50,000 views. How good is he? Unsolicited gamers wanting to play against him 1 on 1 are asked to pay $20 by PayPal before wasting his time begging for a 5 round match.
