Yahoo And MSN To Interop IM
InternetWeek reports that MSN and Yahoo will announce on Wednesday interoperability between their instant messenger services, a move that will likely put a hammer on the hopes of other IM services.
Currently, AOL Instant Messenger is the market leader with 41.6 million users, while Yahoo commands 19.1 million to MSN’s 14.1 million. Combined, their 33.2 million users will create a block of two powerful IM services, with a damn near insurmountable lead.
Plus, who doesn’t believe AOL might be next?
This could be very bad news to upstarts like Google Talk. I couldn’t find any data on the number of users on Jabber-based clients, but it stands to reason that the numbers are far behind. Considering Microsoft is currently talking to combine internet operations with AOL, you may soon see a client from one of the big boys that can contact 74.8 million users. It’s hard to win on features with numbers like that.
UPDATE: Atul says he’s been adding MSN contacts to his Y!M for a few days now, and sends a screenshot:

Anybody still using Google Talk to IM with other people? Among the people that I IM with, GTalk usage plummeted after about 2 days, once the “Google’s putting out an IM client? Gotta get that!” hype wore off and reality set in.
And Wumpus never IM’ed me back! >:(
Anyway, I like the news — I’ve always hated AIM and have contacts pretty much split between Yahoo and MSN.

What about the large amount of people who use both MSN Messenger and Yahoo IM? Figure there have to be at least a few thousand or million people who use both, or have an account with both that has been inactive.
